The Little Mermaid - Callback Material
ARIEL: Father says the human world is dangerous, but how can he be so certain when he’s never even been there? Look at all the wonderful things they’ve created— this shiny silver fork, this beautiful little box…and this strange fluffy brush. What do they use it for? Music? Cooking? Brushing their seaweed?
There’s an entire world above us, and I want to see it for myself. I want to feel the sun on my face, walk along the shore, discover where I truly belong. I love my family, but I can’t spend my whole life hiding beneath the waves. One day, somehow, I’m going up there!
DAME: Oh hello boys and girls! I’m feeling very sorry for myself. I've been looking for a job. No luck as yet though. (Encourages Audience for sympathy) At least it's nice here by the beach, isn't it boys and girls? Do you like the beach? Do you like sand? Do you like waves? Well here's one for you. (Dame waves.) I was scuba diving the other day actually, and I saw a shaking ship on the ocean floor. It was a nervous wreck! Hey, what’s this? (Finds a newspaper) Ooooo, I’ll have a look in the jobs section. See if there’s anything going. (Reading) King Poseidon, ruler of the mer-people, does by royal decree, hereby request applications for the position of royal mer-childminder. Applications must be made in person at: The Grand Palace, One Cockleshell Row, Bottom of the Sea, no later than five pm today. Holy mackerel, my luck’s in. I’d be perfect for that. Looking after little fishy people. Oh look at the time. I’d better get my “skates” on. Right, where’s my scuba-suit?
URSULA: Sweet, sweet Ariel, I would dearly love to help you – truly I would – but If King Poseidon found out that I turned his little girl into a human... well, he banished me for, you know, the erm incident, so I'd hate to think what he'd do if he found out I'd swapped his baby's fins for feet. Ok then sweet-cakes, here's the deal. I can turn you into a human but listen up; there are some terms and conditions. Before the sun sets tomorrow, you've got to get your hu-man to fall in love with you. If he doesn't – you turn back into a mermaid, and you'll belong to me. Forever. Oh, and I’ll need your voice, for payment. So what about it? Have we got a deal?
(Ariel exits) No more laughing, no more chitter-chatter. And certainly no more singing! Let’s see her find true love now. (Cackles.)
SEBASTIAN: Me? Nervous? Don’t be ridiculous! I’m the King’s most trusted adviser. I’m the finest musical director beneath the seven seas. I have conducted choirs of clams, orchestras of octopuses and a trio of tuna who were almost in tune!
Everything was going perfectly until Ariel disappeared. I have to find her before King Triton discovers she is missing. Okay, if he asks, she is rehearsing. Yes—that’s it! Rehearsing somewhere very quiet…very far away…and possibly above sea level.
Oh, who am I fooling? I’m finished! He’ll boil me, butter me and serve me with chips. Ariel, where are you?
PRINCE: (Breathes in) Ah men. Smell that ocean air. Isn’t it wonderful? Grimsby. Did you hear that? That song. You must have heard it. It’s that voice again! The one that saved me. One minute I was sinking. It was getting darker and darker. And then somehow I started rising up. I thought I was dead. I thought there was an angel taking me to heaven. And then I heard it. The angel’s voice. She saved me, Grimsby. I must find her.
Wait, what was that? Look! There! Pirates! All hands on deck men! Mr Smith! Lower the mainsail. And tie down that jib. Mr Green. Hard to port. We'll take these pirates head-on.
SCUTTLE:
Scuttle: Hey! What are you doing up here?
Sebastian: We’re looking for Ariel. Have you seen her?
(Scuttle looks confused.)
Scuttle: Ummmmmm…
Sebastian: Think! It’s important. Have you seen Ariel?
Scuttle: Wait! I think I saw her.
Sebastian: Where?
Scuttle: When I was flying over the beach. At Smuggler’s Cove I think.
Sebastian: Oh no! What else did you see?
Scuttle: Nothing?
Sebastian: Are you sure you saw nothing else?
Scuttle: Yes.
Sebastian: “Yes” you saw something else or “yes” you’re sure you saw nothing else.
(Scuttle looks confused again.)
Scuttle: Ummmmm….
Sebastian: Oh for the love of Tritan! Think, think!
Scuttle: Ooo! Ooo! There was something else! She had legs.
Sebastian: What? Oh this is a disaster!
Scuttle: Hey relax! I’m sure you’ll find a way out of this pickle. You just need some positoovity!

(Enter Ariel's sister mermaids, Shelly, Pearl and Sandy.)
Sandy: Hey Ariel. Whatcha ya doin?
Pearl: Dreaming of human stuff again?
(Shelly, Pearl and Sandy giggle.)
Shelly: Oh Ariel, won't you ever learn?
Pearl: (To Shelly & Sandy) Ever since she hatched all she's wanted to do is live on the surface. With those...
Sandy, Shelly, Pearl: Humans. ( all giggle.)
Shelly: Well let me tell you now sister, it ain't gonna happen.
(Sandy, Shelly and Pearl laugh again.)
Pearl: What are you doing out here anyway? You know daddy doesn't allow you to wander this far from the palace.
Sandy: Yeah, he sent us to get you. You're supposed to be at the palace — teaching the little fish to swim.
Shelly: (correcting her) Teaching the little fish to sing.
(Sandy shrugs her shoulders.)
Pearl: Well you'd better get there soon — or daddy'll be really cross.
Shelly: Anyway, we gotta swim.
Sandy: They've opened a new dive-through matcha place in the Reef!
Pearl & Sandy: Bye Ariel.
Sandy: See ya sis!
