LAMDA Exams

We offer optional speech and drama exams through LAMDA - London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. LAMDA as an educational organisation leads in the field of theatre arts and the spoken word. LAMDA maintains that the development and use of communication and language are at the heart of a child’s learning. Their examinations provide a framework for learning, with achievable and measurable goals at each stage of the process.

LAMDA offers examinations in speech and drama, designed to help develop communication, language and literacy skills. These examinations provide a platform for children and young people to gain confidence, work as a team, hold a conversation and participate more fully in their society. They also provide teachers with an opportunity to motivate and engage their pupils.

The new LAMDA SYLLABUS comes into effective from September 2014. New syllabus publications are available directly from LAMDA.

The LAMDA Introductory examinations help develop communication skills, encourage confidence and provide an exciting introduction to reading and poetry.

LAMDA’s Communication examinations, particularly in Using Spoken English and Speaking in Public, help students prepare for interviews, make presentations and provide a platform for those careers where such skills are important.

The Performance examinations provide vocational pathways to work in acting, theatre, musical theatre and the teaching of performing arts, as well as the opportunity for personal development through a wide spectrum of interests.
LAMDA examiners are teachers, theatre practitioners and speech and drama professionals. They are trained to a high standard to ensure that each examination experience is positive and constructive for individual learners.

LAMDA examinations are accredited by Ofqual, the regulator in England and its counterparts in Wales and Northern Ireland. The exams are accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) here in Ireland. Their accredited examinations can also be used to meet the Additional and Specialist Learning (ASL) criteria within the Diplomas. Level 3 examinations will also help students enter UK universities, through the University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) points system.

Why take LAMDA Exams?

LAMDA exams offer an on-going measurement of progress in speech and drama. The gradual progression through the LAMDA grades provides benchmarks for every stage of a student’s development. The LAMDA grades provide a useful underpinning for the Montfort College of Performing Arts syllabus and help us to support a steady improvement in self-confidence, vocal and physical technique, and language awareness.

The exams are tailored to the abilities of students of different ages. For a five-year-old, reciting an eight-line poem is an achievement to be celebrated, and for a sixteen-year-old, delivering a Shakespeare soliloquy or giving a speech on a pressing moral or ethical issue is equally praiseworthy. LAMDA Exams recognise these achievements, provide a context within which they can be assessed, and reward them with nationally recognised qualifications.
